FOCUS ON FEELINGS: An Attainment eReader
Practice in recognizing emotion for autistic teens and young adults

Focus on Feelings is a collection of photo-illustrated stories with a variety of narrators in a range of ages, races, and gender. This unique product uses the conventions of story to illustrate emotions. Each photo and accompanying text conveys one very specific turn in the story.

After each story page, the reader is asked to identify the narrator's emotion by name and symbol. In this way there is instant feedback as the story progresses. For example:

Story: “When Can I Drive?” with narrator D.J.

PAGE 1: D.J. has to wait two days to take his driver’s test. Emotion: impatient
PAGE 2: He fails the written test. Emotion: disappointed
PAGE 3: D.J. studies “Rules of the Road” with a friend. Emotion: motivated
PAGE 4: He passes the driving test. Emotion: thrilled

Multiple-choice testing is built in to the story itself, so following the story are two activities: Connecting name of emotion to its symbol, and a memory matching game. Both activities use the same four emotions as the story.

Text is written at fifth-grade level, but stories are all aimed at teens, young adults and adults.
